Like you, I was diagnosed recently, and only after having a mixed episode that was easily the worst mood fluctuation I've ever experienced. It lasted almost 3 1/2 months before I had a mini-breakdown and finally let my internist refer me to a psychiatrist. Honestly, I've suspected I was bipolar for years, but now it's 'official' and I can understand how you're feeling about the diagnosis. It IS scary. But with the right meds, it's manageable.
