I think Ceriane hit the nail on the head. There's no pressure. No man worth his salt (key phrase is the "worth his salt" part) will want you to give yourself to them without YOU being ready. That's important. While there are certainly men who are in it just for sex, there are plenty more who are more than willing to wait that year you mentioned to be ready.
