I would first narrow everything down, kind of like they use to do on the Clean Sweep
http://tlc.discovery.com/fansites/cl...leansweep.html TV show; I remember one woman having and wanting to keep a zillion pairs of shoes so she had to choose only one out of every five or ten pairs (arranged so the "like" pairs were together) and another similar situation where the person had to do a "toss" game and got to keep the ones she tossed the rock or whatever into it's box from X feet :-)
If you could save one of each item to remind you, that might not be too much. I've recently drastically gone through all my family heirlooms; my brothers and/or their children don't want them so I decided to sell a bunch of stuff. Another friend without a job recently sold a lot of his Star Trek stuff he'd bought/saved from an earlier time and made a bit of money.
