Is this typical for the drug?

ok, i was on neurontin for like two years... and when i started takin it, a friend of mine warned me that it had made her dad pretty "flaky" while he was on it... yeah, i had so many side effects mentally as far as brain processing... and the bad part was i didn't realize they were side effects until well into my treatment... i finally mentioned to my doc at the time that i was having trouble thinking straight... transposing numbers & thoughts... that i'd go to say one word, but the opposite would actually come out... that i was reading street signs backwards... and his response was "we have to get you off that immediately!"
fun times... i wish i had known sooner that what i was experiencing was drug related... i thought i was just confused/that my brain was so full up with everything else i was going through that i wasn't concentrating enough...
most of the side effects gradually went away after i stopped taking it...
one thing that seems to have been permanent, however, is the damage it did to my memory... short term & long term... abilities to recount things from the past & the abillity to form new memories... i jokingly refer to it as "swiss cheese holes in my brain" when i try to explain to folks just how it is that a 32 year old has memory lapses that are more typical of someone in their 80's... and i've been off it for over 8 years now... pretty sure if my memory was going to recover, it would have by now...
my advice: if you notice anything off... i mean ANYTHING... encourage her to run it by the doc... some of the side effects can be temporary, but others not so much... better to be safe than sorry!!!
