Your husband doesn't know about any hunters, but he does know he can't get whatever he wants that is in the jar (and doesn't know how to "unwant" it or let it go temporarily so he can go at it some other way). He's got that candy in his hand!
What one "has" seems okay whereas making a choice means letting go of something in order to get something and, not being able to see beyond where one is now, it looks like a loss of some sort. So, your husband continues to pretend he has candy.
