Yes, do follow your Dr's directions. Depression is an illness, and it is something you get through with treatments and time, it can have a what "looks" like a single cause, but there are many factors.
Everyone is different and an objective person or team Pdoc and T, can be best guide on your journey.

In my depression journey therapy was started only after I had enough improvement with medication to cope with therapy.

gma45 has a great explaination about parents. I am 30 years away from leaving home and I also got a strong reaction from my Dad.
I also got the 'get over it speech' and over time was able to come to an understanding.
