I feel your pain! I've been a chronic painer due to severe spinal problems for over 25 years, and getting family to understand is like trying to get a donkey to stand up when he wants to SIT.  I continually hear "Well, maybe if you went for a ride, you'd feel better." Yeah right -- riding in a car is one of the WORST things for spinal patients! Or how about "Let's go shopping!" Ummm -- those cement floors in the malls just about put me in the hospital!! And you can NEVER find a scooter in those places cause all the old people have them. I don't own one myself cause I can still walk---if you can call it that.
I don't think my doctor even believes me! I've BEEN on Methadone plus the Fentanyl patches -- but I had to stop the patches because I started breaking out & itching. Did he give me anything to replace the patches??? Heck NO. Did I ask??? SURE! I'm only on 30mg of Methadone per DAY. And to say I'm in agony is putting it mildly -- yet he still won't give me any more -- and I've never had an increase either! Every month, he pokes my back to "make sure" I still hurt -- and I have almost falled off the table when he's done that. Plus it puts me in bed the rest of the day! I've told him that, but does it make any difference? Nope. And get this == I can't switch doctors cause he is the ONLY doctor in the WHOLE area who prescribes pain medications -- I've called every single doctor in 3 neighboring cities, and no one prescribes pain meds as they're afraid of the DEA.
So there's my sob story. LOL Sorry I got so long winded. Don't have anyone to talk to.
I know what you're going thru and I'm sorry. I wish I DID have a magic want for you. Try going to the site "DailyStrength" -- they have a "Letter to those without Chronic Pain" and you can print it out and give it to your husband! Go to the chronic pain site and ask them to post it.
