I was born in...wait for it...Newfoundland! Now if there was ever a Canadian sterotype in Canada we're it. And for the bloody life of me I can't dredge up a Newfie joke though hundreds of people have come up to me since I arrived on the mainland to tell me one. Usually they're funny. It's odd you know, it's like that's a custom up here to lay a newfie joke on a newfie. We're supposed to be pretty laid back and humour laden in the self deprecating dept. We are by and large I guess. When I was growing up Newfie jokes were common amongst ourselves but it was weird to have people up here do it. They don't do it to be rude...I think they think it's the thing to do. HaHa...back home mainlander jokes abound as much as Newf ones. If I began laying mainlander jokes around up here I think it might piss some locals types off. All these jokes are fairly lighthearted althougha few people back home these days think they've had their day. It's just a bit of fun but then they're pretty ingrained in me. My family and relatives, friends back there etc are old time newfs and pretty tolerant.
As a Canadian I DO wear flannel shirts...only in the winter though and I'm particular about the tartan. Some tartan is bloody hard on the eyes. I was a weekend warrior beer swizzling bar hopping Maple Leaf fan before I stopped drinking. Unfortunately I'm still a Leafs fan....eh?

And in the land of my people that might sound like: Jasus bye oi still likes the Leafs...too friggin' bad what? I can lapse back into a pretty strong east coast accent when I'm really relaxed or was partyin' 'er up.
Hmmm...any Newfoundlanders here? Open invite to say hello is out there. I may even do a separate post. Newfs living away and how that feels etc. Fish out of water so to speak. Anyway stereotypes. They can be hurtful frustrating and downright misleading at times. A little funny too if not taken too seriously or are a vehicle for hate. Interesting topic.
