I only take pills twice a day now, I use different colors for AM, PM to help me remember- I'm horrible with memory. Yellow for am--sun rising. Purple for evening-setting sun(I lived in New Mexico for awhile they have the most awesome setting suns in the Sandia mountains!
I can take up to two extra pain pills for break though pain so in a clear 4 week I put the two extra for the day, I can tell at a glance if I have taken any for that day and I keep only two in my purse. When my pain is under control the hardest thing for me is to remember the pain patch every other day of corse it's easy to remember when I'm in pain. 
Likewater-I'm sorry unenlightened police were the ones to stop for you. I was always Lucky to get more knowledgeable police if I was dissociating badly I was taken to the hospital but never to jail. The medical alert is a great idea.
