if he is asking you to stay over that is a good sign i think, it shows two things, one, that he is worried about his safety and wants to take action to protect himself, and two, that he trusts you enough to tell you thatl

if he can't tell you everything that is going on for whatever reason, at least he is not pushing you away which would be more frustrating for you and bad healthwise for him.

like others have said, don't do more than you are able to and don't let his emotions swallow you. you have to keep your eye on your own boundries and make them clear to yourself and to him if necessary. but the fact he is letting you help him i think is a very good sign and reason for hope.
