Bathony, I think it is sometimes like this. Humans can't tolerate things to be random. It scares them very much. Something must happen for a reason. So if someone attacked you when you were little, it might be too scary to admit that no one really controlled that (more than the attacker, and sometimes the victims are random or sort of come in handy). No one controlled it, it was for nothing, and nothing to cling onto or save you.

I think that is one of the reasons people think it is their fault. Because if it is, there was some strange sense of control, something that made it happen.

So even if it hurts thinking you were to blame, it is less scary. Even if it means you have to believe you are useless (which you are not).

Also, I think people are generally good. Not abusers and those, but most people. I think it is a defense thing so people can live together peacefully, in the tribes or where they used to live. If someone was mistreated and always grew up to be outwardly hostile, there would be a non stop war. So I think people are programmed to turn it inwards.

I don't know if any of this made sense...
