He knows you have real feelings, He could have acted with more integrity and care, been more clear and string you along by having his actions match his words. He could have cut ties when he realized you wanted more, but people don't always do that. Maybe it's because he's confused a bit too. He does sound like he's having issues of his own.

I think to keep trying with someone who clearly doesn't want what you want, that would be a mistake. It's hard to want something and not get it, but there is usually a reason why we don't always get what we want. Sometimes it's because it just isn't right for us.
