I find that becoming self-aware of the feelings before I react is something that takes a lot of practice. Taking some deep breaths and assessing my feelings and temptations, trying to understand where they're coming from, whether or not the reaction is justified and as a result of what's happening in the moment, the potential risks/rewards/consequences, etc.
