From what I've read, sunglasses are nowhere near enough. The articles emphasize, "not even the darkest sunglasses". Something like welder's goggles may be enough but if you didn't know what you're doing, you could still damage your vision seriously.
The safe way to view an eclipse is to
project the image onto some sort of screen. For a previous eclipse I set up a 20-power birding telescope on a tripod, aimed it toward the sun (without, of course, looking through it), held a piece of white cardboard behind it, and adjusted the scope till I got a good image of the sun on the paper.
Don't let anyone look through the scope or they'll be sorry.
