Radio codes vary a lot from place to place too; one place I worked a 16 was a DOA, another it was a Code 1. On one run that I wasn't on, a man pulled a knife in the back of our medic (a Code 40A). Our chief, who tended to mumble a little, was driving and tried to call it in very quietly on the radio. He called a Code 40A in the back of the truck, but the dispatcher thought they heard Code 48 (rape). By the time they got to the hospital, half the police, fire, and EMS units in the county were wondering who was getting raped in the back of our truck. Minor communication problem...
