Wow ~ I don't have a clue what's going on with this guy. It sounds to me like he's either very immature, or depressed or both.
I think I'd leave him alone for now. He sounds like he's not ready for a relationship at this time. The distance isn't helping matters either, and he's quite "close" to his Mom which seems to be taking a toll on him.  He might need to grow up a little more.
I think I'd just move on for now, and see what happens. Maybe a year from now things will be different but I don't think he's ready for anyone right now.
