This is just my opinion. She couldn't be in a very "happy" relationship is she's messing around with someone else's "man." And evidently HE isn't sure what HE wants right now if he felt he had to lie to you about this since you're just re-establishing your relationship after the breakup. 
Why did you break up in the first place? Was he cheating? If he was, I certainly wouldn't give him another chance!
He doesn't seem ready to commit. Since he felt he had to lie to you and go out with his ex, I think I'd just back off and let this one go. Personally, I can stand someone who lies to me, since trust is a major issue in a relationship, and now you're going to be questioning everything he does.
