The SUPEREGO is your reasonable mine....the logical, rational thinking that gives the way to solve the problems that the negative emotions are causing.
There is constant tension between the ID & the SUPEREGO.....each tries to influence each other in different directions.....this dialog goes on inside of our head when there are things that come up in our life
The EGO is the wise mind.....it's a state of being that accepts the tension between the ID & the SUPEREGO.....it's where we can see the BIG PICTURE (both sides of the picture.....emotional & reasonable). It is the fluid process that puts both parts of our mind together to make the logical decision incorporating the emotional & the reasonable mind.....it's a state of peacefulness when you come to the wise decision that makes the EGO feel comfortable.
This description melds both the concept that your T is talking about with the DBT concept of wise mind.......it was the best way I could understand it.
When your ID part of your mind (the lymbic system) has control, there is no blood available for the SUPEREGO part of your mind (the frontal lobe). In order for the SUPEREGO to have some say in our decision process, we need to quiet doen the ID part of our brain so the SUPEREGO part can have a chance to think......only then can we combine both in order to come up with the wise decision making process of the EGO.
Don't know if this helps:
BRAIN:
frontal lobe
SUPEREGO
reasonable mind
Lymbic system
ID
emotional mind
STATE OF BEING:
EGO
blending of ID & SUPEREGO thinking to
make wise mind decisions
