That's the good thing with DBT.....it teaches you how to recognize the emotions of your ID......it also teaches you to recognize & hear what your SUPEREGO had to say & then it teaches you to use both your ID & your SUPEREGO to logically define the wise solution between your ID & your SUPEREGO.....but you can't do that without recognizing both side of your thought process.....neither one should be dismissed......but they need to be thought through & understood so that you can come up with a wise solution for the situation you find yourself in, resolving the conflict between your ID & your SUPEREGO.
Both your ID & your SUPEREGO are necessary, they are a physical part of our brain....not something you can just get rid of....what you learn to do is to reprogram the neuropathways which control your actions. That is done through the EGO's analysis of the ID & the SUPEREGO & taking control of the action, changing the learned response from earlier in life.
The ID thoughts come from your brains Lymbic system (your emotions)
The SUPEREGO thoughts come from your brains frontal lobe (your moral values)
We can't live without either. We need our emotions (ID) to tell us when something is bad (fear, anger, sadness, shame) & good (love, joy, competence)
We need our reasonable mind, moral values (SUPEREGO) to tell us what is right & wrong......society can not live without moral values.....they have to come from the individuals knowing what is right & wrong not just from knowing what the laws are.....without the SUPEREGO, you would think it was ok to hit someone or even kill anyone.
it takes the EGO to put together the emotional mind ID that might be telling you that you are feeling fear because this person is threatening to kill you.....while your SUPEREGO your reasonable mind is telling you that morals are not to kill. That conflict between the ID & the SUPEREGO is a good thing we need that in place so we don't take actions on either the ID or the SUPEREGO, but wait for our EGO to resolve this conflict. It works with both thoughts to determine what is the wise thing to do. In this case it might be to decided that it's ok to kill this person who is threatening to kill you because killing in this situation would be in self defense & it's better them than you. This is how the mind works when it's working properly.
Unfortunately when we have mental illnesses, the mind doesn't always work properly & we need to learn actions (coping skills) to get react to certain things (those actions are driven by programmed neuropathways in our brain). Our actions from the past may not be appropriate for the world we are now living in & we need to reprogram those pathways & that is done through the EGO's analysis along with the fact we need to recognize the ID (emotional thinking) along with the SUPEREGO (reasonable thinking) & determine if that is correct in the first place......then through awareness & analysis, come up with the appropriate actions which will start to reprogram those neuropathways & start giving us the wise solution to the situations we find ourself in NOW. That's what therapy is ALL ABOUT.
