Do these people know how you feel inside? Who exactly are these people?

I mean as long as you can make a decent living, and be happy at the same time, go for the second option. I was in a similar situation once. I was expected to do one thing, but felt more comfortable with the other option. After a horrendous time dithering I went for the option I wanted. So many years later, I wonder now why i ever hesitated & sure as hell did not regret it.

I'd say follow your heart. Doing what makes you happy is much more important than 'prestige' or other people's (outsiders) expectations or whatnot.

May I also commend your parents for not putting any pressure on you.
