people remember their trauma's in all kinds of ways. memory recall (remembering the trauma) can happen through art therapy, writing, my memories tend to come to me while Im camping, boating or hiking or just relaxing.
my point is maybe this time while at Sheppard Pratt you can ask them to help you find non invasive, non traumatic ways for you to recall your traumatic memories and deal with them in ways that wont get your alters going wonky every which way.. Thats how I learned what works best for me when working on traumatic memories.. I told them right out this dont work because this, that dont work because of that, my out patient treatment providers want me to start dealing with all these trauma memories but I dont know how to do that. All of a sudden every one of my treatment team at Sheppard Pratt were full of all kinds of ways for me to take time for getting comfortable, focus on the memory I was working on, in non traumatic ways. They even let me skip out of a couple scheduled groups to work on memory recall type work.
I didnt like remembering the past either until one of the treatment team explained to me that unresolved trauma memories are like the elephant in the room... you know its there somewhere and you dont know when its going to rear its ugly head.. so you spend all your energy focused on fighting its appearance, avoiding it, pushing it away. So much so that when it comes to dealing with other things you can't fully deal with life and such because 95% of the energy is on that unwanted elephant in the room and only 5% is actually on the present and moving forwards. Then she pointed out all the things I didnt notice but my out patient treatment providers, family and friends did about how I was coping with every day life, and how that "elephant" was taking up so much more of my time and energy, then I realized. At first I totally hated the dear woman for showing me that elephant but after a while it got easier to deal with. now when the past trauma intrudes I take the time to deal with that "elephant" it makes it so much easier.
Im glad last time you went to Sheppard Pratt you did so whole heartedly. I hope this time too goes so well for you.
