Hypothetically, were you able to determine what came first, how would that help you? (
I ask that as a real and not a rhetorical question.) Is it possible the depression has gone on so long that it has now acquired a life of its own independent of the situation?
Regardless, I hope you can find ways to mitigate the worst effects of the illness.
