I lived through a very traumatic childhood. My therapist says there is "Big T" trauma and "Little t" trauma. Little t trauma is consistent, low level trauma, such as that one might face in an abusive home. Big T is a big event that happens once. I would seek out a therapist who is trained and versed in trauma issues, because they all are not trained in those issues, or who practices a form of therapy called IFS (Internal Family Systems), or someone who practices Somatic Experiencing.
