What do your parents really know about ADD? If one parent knows all about ADD and the other does not believe in it, or just knows the "Stereotype Definition" there will be problems. I know from experience about this... I'm ADD Dad here, but only found out about my own ADD three years ago. I started reading like crazy, because this is Such a TREATABLE disorder. I can do things to improve myself and the ones I love who have put up with me. My diagnosis came at a really bad time in our marriage. "Room Mates" or "Household Managers" was about it. Total Disconnect... I started feeling better, acting better and losing weight. (The REAL problem) We both had in common the emotional eating and lifelong battle with our weight. Out of nowhere, I get the "Magic Pill" and don't self medicate with food anymore and she admits she was mad about this. Her meds tend to make her sex drive drop and weight gain in a side effect.

I started to see ADD in my youngest daughter (Pretty obvious) and I began to understand how ADD shaped her reactions/behaviors, just as they shaped mine. I eventually spotted ADD in my oldest daughter. She was A LOT harder to spot the ADD traits, but it was almost impossible to work through situations regarding the kids when ADD was such a sore subject and it WAS A Major Reason behind so many things. I was determined that if my girls have ADD, I was doing everthing I could to keep it from smashing their self esteem and living for decades beating up themselves and believing the A$$holes who tell them their are stupid, crazy or lazy!

ADD is still a bit or a sore subject, but when my oldest had gone to such a dark place and the doctor my wife's church recommended could not figure out what was wrong. I figured out what was wrong! This doctor told my daughter when she asked if maybe she was ADD "You don't have ADD, you just want Adderall to be skinny like your Dad"! I almost came un-glued!!!! This "Psychologist" refered us to a psychiatrist that she said was "The Best". We went to him, and what do you know... Diagnosed with ADD and responded Immediately to Vyvanse. My daughter is doing so much better!

Sorry for my ramble If your parents don't understand how ADD effects your world, it sure will be hard to move forward. My wife Still has not read a book about ADD, but she sees the results now in our daughter.
