I had one psychologist that was into the breathing thing when an anxiety attack hits. I know how much breathing works even when I am hurt....breathing can actually lessen pain also....however my problem is that when an anxiety attack hits, I can't think about breathing & it just gets worse.
I end up with chest pains that were so bad, they ended up doing heart monitoring & a stress test. I have never passed out, but that may be a good thing because then your breathing starts over more calmly.
The best thing I have found is that when I feel my anxiety level start to raise uncontrollable, I then take my med I use for anxiety. It usually takes about 30-40 minutes for it to start working, but at that point, I can start to really relax. I usually try to lay down when I take the med....& then I usually can go to sleep for a few hours to help even more. Of course, I am not working (on disability) & I can't lay down if I am out doing something when the anxiety hits......but the best is when I can lay down & relax.
Hopefully you will be able to find something that works for you,
Debbie
