I actually understand this one and would probably do the same in their position. Having a bipolar mother could end up being an extra stressor, which an average child does not experience. This would easily rule them out as part the control group for an anxiety study. They have to do everything they can to make sure that their results are accurate, because serious decisions about treating child anxiety could be made based on these results.
