I watched a doctor once, Seaswept, who was sitting just outside the nurses' desk,
and he was dressed for surgery, but before he went into the operating room for
scrubbing, he sat at the desk and just stared into space for the longest time.
I think he must have been clearing his mind of anything that could have distracted him before surgery. When he finished, he got up energetically and walked into
the operating room. I had the feeling that his whole attention then was directed to the operation ahead.
I've tried that at times, and it really helps. Clearing the mind of distractions and
then concentrating fully on what needs to be done. It does benefit me even if it took a couple of times to get it off and running.
