Such, don't you have dissociative diagnosis? Sounds to me (although I may be waaay off) that it's a reflection of that. I call it my back burner feeling but I get a feeling where it's like I'm on the back burner just watching while someone else is controlling and being, although there's no damage done, it's not me having control.
Perhaps your back seat driving is similar (although my backburner isn't in dreams) that basically you're in the back just watching the ride until you come back out and get control of the car.
Maybe I'm thnking too simple minded, but it seems pretty clear to me.
