I once had someone tell me, when I was in the deepest throes of a depressive episode, that 'even after the darkest of nights, the sun still rises'. That phrase gave me hope. It was grafitti that was written on the wall of a hospital for the most ill and destitute people, somewhere in Italy. If there can be hope in those bleak places, then I think there can be hope here too.
