Being new in any social situation is often difficult. While most people will say "Hi" to you in chat if they don't recognize your name, they may be waiting for you to share more with them rather than trying to draw things out of you. It just all depends who happens to be online at the time in the chat rooms.

Chat is definitely not for everyone, but we provide it as a service to those who may enjoy it.
