All browsers should be free. Google chrome may be fast but it's a resource hog and you give up some privacy if you use google anything. I just don't trust google anymore. Their main goals now seem to be to invade your privacy and to try to sell you something whether you're shopping or not.
They've lost their way.
I still use FF but it has gotten bloated. A lot of add-ons and plug-ins are buggy. One of my old favorites was NoScripts. Now I have to keep adding sites to the whitelist because they get booted of the list for some reason.
It's a PITA to have to okay safe scripts over and over. Other than that FF works fine for me even using extensions and add-ons.
There are several small and lightweight browsers you can try.

Someone here suggested SR Iron to me. It works well and you don't have the privacy issues you have with google.

K-meleon is based on gecko/mozilla/netscape
It takes time to learn a new browser and tweak it.
What OS do you use?
