A lot of people access PC on their phones. So if you have PC up on your phone, and your phone is in your pocket...voila...pocket riders!
Actually, in my case, people are purse riders! And yes, they are there for moral support.

I interpret this phrase to have morphed into a term loosely meaning to take someone with you. I'll also mention in the old days, the 5th pocket on a pair of trouser's (or a vest) was usually used for very, very important items such as a watch, coins, case knife, etc. to carry on one's person hence, pocket rider? Just a thought.
