He should never have told you that he asked his wife. He could have just said, "Well, I was able to find out something for you", although I am not sure I even understand why he needed to ask anyone. As far as the language, if you feel comfortable bringing it up, that would be fine. If you don't get a good feeling about this guy, go with your gut instinct and find someone else.
