No need to be so categorical, hankster - while it makes little sense to me to join a class in order to make friends, for me personally I can't imagine making friends in a setting that's not based on shared interests - so for me, work, classes, and similar contexts are the places I would be able to make friends. That is not to say that it works like that for everybody, but it's definitely not true that it doesn't work for anybody.
