I think you'll be fine. I was thinking that you could work a little even if you received SSI or SSD. I don't see how your decision to leave the job makes much difference. You tried and you realized you couldn't do it. If you had been fired because you couldn't function well enough, the end result would have been the same. If I was in your position I wouldn't hire a lawyer until and unless the benefits are denied.
