I think it's like Anika says, sometimes you have to check out a forum before you actually join. Also sometimes I will try to read a thread and can't make sense of it, so I will go back to it again and again until it makes sense. This is especially true of long posts. Sometimes I read but don't have the energy to respond. I'm sure that's true of others, too.
