The author of the article is just saying to go to college for yourself once you feel ready and motivated. Keep in mind, the author isn't saying to avoid college if you're motivated but don't know exactly what to study; the majority of people don't know what to study and even if they do, many of them change their mind to something else. There are many people who have psychiatric illnesses yet go to college. One of my best friends was depressed, suicidal, and had bouts of extreme rage where he'd hit a brick wall and injure his hands. A few other students whom I didn't know all that well had a disorder along the schizophrenic spectrum, one of which missed a lot of classes yet managed to pass all the courses she was in. If you're not already receiving treatment for your psychiatric illness, then do so, you shouldn't let it define who you are and prevent you from success.
