Hi ~ I'm 63 (WOW, IS SHE OLD) And I was in a psych ward years ago, when I was in my 20's. And believe it or not, it was GREAT! That was after the time when they used to call them the "snake pits." LOL
When I went in I was TERRIFIED cause I didn't know what they were like either. I thought the worst. I thought it would be dark, and nasty. But my room was light and airy and nice! I shared it with another gal who had worse troubles than mine.
I went in because I had a nervous breakdown -- I was severely depressed, and I kind of "lost it." I couldn't cope anymore. I didn't hurt myself or anything -- that's probably cause I'm a coward.
I saw the psychiatrist every day for an hour. Plus we had group therapy sessions every day for an hour too. Then we had occupational therapy for at least an hour -- I made a cookie jar -- and I still have it! It's almost 40 years old!! I'm proud of that thing. LOL Plus I made belts too. (whoopee) I enjoyed doing those things tho. It kept me busy.
We had to have a physical when we went in to be sure we weren't pregnant or that we weren't abused too. I didn't like that. But it was necessary, so I abided by it. I had been nauseated when I went in, so I had to have some tests run, and they found I had "gravel" in my gall bladder -- so I had to have a special diet -- no fried foods, darn it! They served fried chicken one night, and I couldn't have any. I got some broiled fish or some stupid thing.
I stayed 2 weeks, and by the time I got out, I felt 100% better and had made new friends. I also didn't put up with some stuff my husband was pulling on me either! So it did me a lot of good!! I continued to see my psychiatrist for another year afterwards before I was released.
So don't be afraid. It's really a GOOD place, and they just are looking out for YOU. You'll be glad you went, I promise you! God bless & take care. Lee
