I think different t's operate differently... Psychoanalysis used to be (still is I guess) 5X per week. I've heard of some people doing that 3X weekly. Some psychodynamic therapists see their clients 2X per week. Or 1X per week. Or even fortnightly (once every two weeks, not sure if you have that term in the US). Same with other varieties... Depends on the therapist and stuff, I guess. I've heard of some people going monthly too.

How often can depend on a number of things (including, but not limited to)

- Whether there are hard things going on in the persons life or whether they are doing really well
-Whether there is processing of trauma or something like that
-Whether they are trying to build up rapport.

Then of course don't underestimate how much you are prepared to pay (in private practice) factoring in...

I think it is about figuring what is best for you. And appreciating that what is best for you can change over time...

I see my t weekly. But she has talked about how typically she sees people fortnightly. I think she was hinting but I said 'please can I see you next week' so she seems to know I want weekly and she is humouring me for the time being... She has also mentioned monthly sessions... Probably to make me more amenable to the notion of fortnightly sessions.... Hmm... Grr... I'm onto her ;-)
