yep, humans ruined her before she was a year old. Probably saw her mother murdered, was isolated, packed off, beat, poked, prodded...., we'll never know what Winkie went through.
This sanctuary has a very very good reputation for respecting the needs of the recovering residents. Unfortunately we can't turn back the clock and return her to her homeland. This type of open space sanctuary is most likely the best we can do to see they get to live out their lives in peace and safety with other elephants.
