Of course, I have to be fairly thick skinned about what others say about my profession so perhaps I am just not all that sensitive to people saying such things about one's job.

On the one hand, you are right. Technically, it was not a personal attack.
On the other hand, I certainly meant it to hurt! The hate was unmistakable.

You raise a very interesting point. When I really wanted to hurt her I attacked her
profession, not her. I
have made personal remarks ("you have a big nose") but never in anger.
What does that say about me?
Was I simply saying, "You're not doing your job"? Or was I making an attack on her sense of identity, to make her ashamed of what she was?
