Every character in your mind is a personification of a different part of you. A lot of it is a collage of different things you've seen thought your life. Even passing strangers on the street could become part of the imagery. It's like your subconscious has this giant bin of magazine clippings and throws together characters for each dream from this bin of your lingering memories (the ones that aren't terribly pertinent to you).
