Exactly, when you cut yourself, the pain releases chemicals in your body which improve your mood. This whole chemical system, when used this way, builds up tolerance so that you need more pain to get more chemicals released. The tolerance that builds up causes you to need more chemicals to get the same improvement in your mood.
