Depression erodes motivation, for sure.

I know of no way to directly conjure motivation. Often (not always), if you treat the depression (meds, therapy, self-help, sleep, exercise, diet, self-soothing, etc.), motivation sooner or later returns on its own.

Depression can be a severe impediment to education. Depending on the nature of an individual's unique experience of depression, it may be more valuable -- not to mention cost-effective -- to temporarily cease academic efforts while dealing with the worst of the depressive episode. Nevertheless, many do manage both depression and academe, albeit at some personal cost.
