IQ tests have their limitations, but technically they are used to make the distinctions. And if you score a certain level on the Mensa test (which can be found on the Internet), then you could receive a "genius" distinction and be able to join the Mensa group of geniuses.

I'd say, in general, go with what your friends say, in this case! Most people are considered to fit into the "normal range," around 68%. But I think most everybody has some skill they excell in, which might not be measured on standard IQ tests. More modern IQ tests try to access a broader range of abilities than the earlier ones such as the Stanford-Binet and the Wechsler tests.
