for me it didnt take anything special to get to know the alters. they were taking over control when ever how ever they were based on what their own jobs purposes, reasons for being was. they had been doing this all my life since the very first traumatic event that caused my separation/dissociative events.
so for me all it took was understanding what was triggering me to dissociate. once I knew why I was dissociating that showed me who my alters were, why they were there and, what their jobs, purposes reasons for being was..
example
one day I noticed I was feeling my dissociative symptoms because of a sad event. the next thing I know, I became aware standing with a sibling calling me "Rainy" So now I knew who "Rainy" was. she was my alter that handled sadness and sad events where I needed to cry. Thats what her job, purpose reason for being was. thats who she was.
one day I was extremely happy and felt my dissociative symptoms. the next thing I knew as I became aware was someone calling me "Sunny" thats when I knew "sunny" was my alter that handled being very happy and happy events. Thats what her job, purpose, reason for being was, thats who she was.
One day at work I was very stressed out and felt my dissociative symptoms, I became aware of a co worker asking me how I do it, I calmly do my job but let an abuser walk in the door trying to intimidate me and my client and I turn into a bear protecting her territory and family.. Thats when I knew who "bear" was and why she was there.. her job purpose, reason for being was to protect me and take on my stressful times where I felt in danger.
People get to know their alters in many different ways. this is because everyone's internal system of alters is different and set up for how ever, what ever they needed to survive.
For some people like me nothing special is needed doing, the alters have been coming out all their life so the alters end up revieling their self just by what makes them take over control and when they take over control.
for some people it takes journaling
for some people it takes working with their treatment providers.
for some people it takes artwork
for some people it takes other kinds of things like inpatient / hospitalization, medication, and a whole lot of therapy techniques..
there is no one way to get to know ones alters, and what works for one person may not work for another..
what ever way that will work for you will happen when its supposed to happen. just keep working with your therapist and they will help point the way that is right for you and your treatment plans.
