Really weird! Especially since one of the most well-known tofu dishes in Chinese cuisine has pork in it!
It's never been weird to me (I used to eat silken tofu like it was yogurt... mom called it "tofu jello") or any of my Asian friends, but we've all experienced the realization that it's a Western thing that tofu is for vegetarians. I think that's changing, though, as it becomes more popular and people realize it's delicious
