Yes I still do a lot of research using in part the motivational model - looking at needs, subconscious drivers, etc.

The point is (and I guess i probably stated things overly strongly because I wanted to see the reactions) that for many purchase decisions we are NOT so much driven by underlying motivations - we are just swamped with options so we buy something familiar.
