I was diagnosed this year at the age of 24. Well I was "probably" diagnosed on the basis of:
a) having depression relatively under control
b) not being able to sit still
c) not being able to study
d) sitting still when under the influence of caffeine

and probably some other things too! I brought up the issue and my psychiatrist said it had been in the back of his mind for a while too. He asked if I'd like to try Ritalin and see what happened and I agreed. It was particularly convenient already having a psychiatrist because in Australia only psychs, neurologists and paediatricians can prescribe stimulants

The next psych visit I sat still for the full half an hour with no leg jiggling! It was amazing. I'm doing a lot better at staying on top of uni work (I handed in an assignment EARLY last week!), sometimes I even manage to listen to lectures and at any rate I don't annoy the people around me by jiggling my legs all the time.

I suppose that I have developed my own ways of dealing with it during school and my first degree but I've always felt like I haven't been doing my best. Now I think that it's possible to get a bit closer to my potential. It's only been a few months and I'm still sorting out doses of everything (I discovered a new drug interaction!) and various other life issues but I am quite optimistic about things.

So yes, medication made a huge difference. And I guess the other thing was that it explained a lot of stuff in my head which I used to beat myself up about. I don't have to think that I'm just lazy anymore. I may be lazy but there's more to it than that!

Now I'm just waiting for the government to start subsidising Concerta!
