Okay, so on Wednesday morning, I had a punch biopsy to determine the source of some strange, non-healing, infected skin sores I have been getting. Things were going okay until Saturday. On Saturday evening, I took a shower, and got out and dried off. The doctor had instructed that I could shower after 24 hours; and all I had to do to care for the stitches wash gently clean them, pat the area dry afterwards, and then apply a little Neosporin. When I was patting the area dry after my shower, I noticed that the stitches were VERY, VERY infected. Like seriously- it was NASTY.
So, I thoroughly (but gently) cleaned it with warm, soapy water and put on the Neosporin.
Well today, I got up and was checking out the stitches, and I noticed that it must have bled a lot during the night, because it was very matted with blood and looked even MORE infected than yesterday. So I did the same thing as yesterday- gently washed it, and was GOING to apply Neosporin.... but then, when I went to pat it dry, one of the stitches came pretty much all the way out. It was just hanging on by a little dried blood. So, I just tugged a little and it popped right out.
Well, you know how stitches are supposed to bond the skin together so that the wound stays closed and heals? Well, the second stitch was only hanging on me inside the wound. I don't know if I'm describing it in a way that makes sense.... like, the wound is a "crater", and the stitch was only attached inside the wound, in the deepest part of the "crater"- it wasn't actually bonding the skin together. So I just thought that it was pointless to have a loose loop of string hanging off off my arm if it wasn't doing anything, so I just clipped it and pulled it out.
So now I'm left with a gaping hole in my arm (it's not very big around, but it's deep) and it's really infected. It's only bleeding a little bit. I don't know what I'm supposed to do for it now, and it REALLY hurts (and it feels kinda weird). I just covered it with a band-aid, and now I'm gonna go take a shower. But if anyone has any advice on how to care for this wound, I'd appreciate it a lot. Is there anything I can do to care for it until I can go back to the dermatologist? The stitches aren't supposed to come out for another seven days.
